Screenshots of Sony Home

Slowly but steadily screenshots of Playstation Home, a new virtual world designed for Sony's Playstation 3, are finding their way to the internet. This social space annex game matchmaking environment is expected for release in October, as a free download for PS3. Currently, Playstation Home is in restricted beta (which explaines the leaked screen caps).

If Sony plays it well and finds a way to combine the visual looks of the current generation of 3D-games with the freedom and openness of the Second Life platform (and this remains to be seen), I think Sony Home will be huge and a major driver for PS3 success. And if Sony lets people use and display information from the web (e.g. from flickr, YouTube, myspace, blogs and other Web 2.0 apps), Home can become an important catalyst for further convergence of web, tv and (mobile) gaming.
